Was looking around and I noticed there's no thread for favourite directors, so I hope you don't mind that I've started one. So to get the ball rolling here's a list of the filmmakers that I adore (in no particular order)

James Cameron
Christopher Nolan
Steven Spielberg
Bryan Singer
Quentin Tarantino
Stanley Kubrick
David Lynch
Matthew Vaughn
Darren Aaronofsky
Francis Ford Coppola
Tim Burton

I feel Tim Burton has been stuck in a rut with his past few films. He could do with a change of scene and cast.

Other great ones

John Carpenter from back in the day
Jim Jarmusch
David Cronenberg

I do agree somewhat about Burton, I place him highly though because when I was growing up as a kid movies like his two Batman films, Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow were big deals.

Can't believe I forgot to mention Carpenter and Cronenberg. I remember being 12 when I first saw The Fly and The Thing. They are amazing pieces of work. Can tell you're a big fan of The Thing. Wink

I don't know what you mean Smile

The Thing is one of my all time faves.

As for Sleepy Hollow and Scissorhands they are great movies, but Burton just doesn't seem to have moved on from then.

Don't get me wrong, I adore Johnny Depp, but I do think what Burton needs to do is make a movie that Depp doesn't star in and which is maybe not be an adaptation or remake of a previously made fantasy film (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland), they were pretty much movies made in auto pilot and cut from the same cloth. I'd love to see him take a chance like he did when he made Ed Wood.

Sir David of Fincher.

I recently watched Se7en in HD for the first time, it's just absolutely perfect. Obviously not all just down to him, but it's so precise and detailed that you know he put all of his time and effort into getting everything just right.

Chris Nolan's films are ambitious and also very precise, and he gets great performances from unexpected people (Robin Williams in Insomnia for example).

Tim Burton is in his own world, whatever movie he makes. He is, in a very literal sense, an artist, and that is reflected in the way his movies are shot, in the sets and the colours.

Fincher is ace. Se7en on Blu-Ray is just stunning and Fight Club was brill.

Will The Social Network win the best picture Oscar?

You know I watched Insomnia earlier this week for the first time and was very impressed with that movie. Great work from everyone, Pacino was wonderfully subtle and him and Williams were sensation on screen together. Unusual pairing in a way but one that works.

Fincher is another of those guys in a class of his own, isn't he. Seven, Fight Club, The Game and of course The Social Network. His combination of great visuals along with working with great scripts usually make for a good pairing.

I think Fincher will win best director, but Black Swan or True Grit will win best picture.

I'm a total Fincher freak. I think Panic Room is great too, and I just want to know more, specifically from him, about Alien 3. Let's not forget Zodiac either. I recommend listening to James Ellroy's commentary on that, he loves the movie and Fincher. Apparently Fincher wanted to do The Black Dahlia, and shoot it in black and white.

I haven't seen True Grit yet, but I am planning too. I think Social Network was a wonderful film, I mean it makes college students sitting at laptops and computers exciting and gripping. Great direction from Fincher and a great script from Sorkin. In a perfect world, Fincher for Best Director, Sorkin for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Nice to see someone that's a fan of Panic Room by the way Jack, I think it's definitely an underrated movie from Fincher, I'm ashamed to say I haven't seen Zodiac yet, I bought the Director's Cut on Blu Ray this week and I am planning to watch it, but I've heard nothing but good things about it everywhere I turn.

I can agree on most of the names mentioned above, But i still miss one name:

Sergio Leone.

I'm sure i don't have to mention any of his work because i think everyone knows what he did.
If only he had lived longer to make some projects he wanted to do.

It's a great body of work he left for us though. The Dollars Trilogy, Once Upon a Time in the West, Once Upon a Time in America, they're just brilliant in so many ways.
