Re: What comics have you just read?
I picked up a few comics over the weekend.
Planetary #27 (think that was the number. It was the last in the series). Warren Ellis final installment wrapping up all the loose ends. Great to see what the Planetary organisation were doing with all the info they had uncovered and the whole idea of a time machine setting the future in stone was excellent. Lovely art by Cassaday as always.
I'm just waiting for the 2nd volume of Absolute Planetary so I read it in oversized loveliness.
PunisherMax #1 - Steve Dillons art is brill. Frank is a bit of a force in the background during this issue. Instead the focus is on the gangsters and in particular a certain bodyguard called Wilson Fisk who is setting himself up as a Kingpin to pull Frank out into the open - a nice take on the character in the Punishermax universe. Extremely violent in a particular eye popping scene.

I've heard nothing but good things about Planetary, and am really looking forward to reading it. I wish they'd reprint the Absolute Planetary, though. I like getting the entire collection (well, the first half anyway) in one volume.

Like all the Absolute books the Planetary one is gorgeous.
I'm still after the Absolute Sandman books.

Last one I've been reading is Invincible, Robert Kirkman's take on the "teenage superhero" theme. Violent, quite realistic (as superhero stuff goes), gritty (in theme, not in art) and sometimes emotional (quite often that emotion is "funny" ). Definitely not the neutered, moral-clear DC stuff...
Not long ago I also read Dark Horse's restarted Conan (well, I hear they've re-re-started it now, I'm talking about the one that began in 2003 with Kurt Busiek as writer). Highly recommended if you're a Conan fan.
Just to drop one more, Just a Pilgrim by Ennis. Really short and sweet post-apocalyptic western theme thing, the main character being a religious zealot (with Ennis in the lead one should be able to guess he's not a very pleasant guy). Some fantastic art of the "burned world"... Gritty as they come.

Re: What comics have you just read?
All quality stuff there
Invincible is great and I've got the first 3 ultimate collections of that. Really enjoying the story and lovely art.
The busiek Conan's were fantastic. Really well done and again brill art. I was getting the hardback collections of it, but they seemed to stop which was a shame.
Just a Pilgrim was classic Ennis.

I haven't read Planetary, but I've understood it to be related/similar to The Authority, which is one of my all-time favorite series?
I'm a huge Punisher fan (my favorite is the truly dark "The End" oneshot by Ennis/Corben), I'll have to check out that Punisher Max
Just to bring up something totally different... My all-time favorite comic series is Mort & Phil (Mortadelo y Filemón, Clever & Smart) by Francisco Ibáñez. Nothing ever made me laugh quite that hard, though I guess you have to like way-over-the-top exaggerations and absurd slapstick

Re: What comics have you just read?
Just read the new Punisher Max #1, BTW. Not bad at all, though I think the quality overall is lower than Ennis previous run. Also the whole eye-popping thing was a bit too silly, I like a tiny bit of realism in my Punisher (there are muscles around the eyeball, you can't make it pop out without cutting those. Pressure to the ocular spaces will just make the eyeball itself pop open.) The curse of medical knowledge I guess.
I'd love to see the rest of the story pan out tho, always loved Mr. Fisk.

Recently read issue 1 of Grant Morrison's Joe The Barbarian and loved it. A loner type kid into his comics and things has a diabetic hypoglaecemic attack while home alone - Things get trippy as he find himself in a fantasy type world with comic book characters, giant robots and other things based on his toys ask him for help. you're not sure whether it is a result of the diabetes or whether something a bit mystical has happened.
lovely art work as well. Recommended
